The Gabardi Memoir excerpt

The Gabardi Memoir is still a few weeks away from launch but it is sooooo close

Here's a blurb: Alberto Gabardi plans to write a memoir of his family and the perfect person to help him do it is his ex-girlfriend, Charlotte. She's an editor IN New York but she's got her own issues. Her personal life is in disarray and to top it off, one of her authors hasn't submitted a manuscript she should have received months ago. Alberto's proposal - to head to England, help with the memoir - is perfect. Her author, Elizabeth, lives just out of London so she can call on her, get the manuscript, take a break from her life, and work with Alberto on his project.

She just didn't expect that once she was back on British soil, she would realise that all those feelings she had for her old boyfriend would return. With a vengeance...

He captured her gaze. “Do you,” he began seriously, “have any second thoughts on this? Any at all?”

She hesitated before answering, and appreciated he was checking with her.

“I don’t think so,” she answered finally.

“Do I detect doubt in your voice?”

She shook her head. “Not doubt. More like trying to come up with reasons why I should say, ‘Thanks but no thanks,’ sort out the problem with my author, and fly back to New York.”

She looked away from his inquisitive stare, but everything about this was telling her she wanted to do it. Wanted to immerse herself in this work and in this story, and that she needed the break and the time to step back from what had been the worst year of her life to do something different. To take her mind away from everything.

And at the same time, sort out the problem with Elizabeth Beckley so that she knew her job wasn’t in any jeopardy.

And yet… Was taking her mind off it by working closely with Alberto Gabardi such a wise move? Even now her heart skipped a beat, and warmth seemed to flood her heart just being this near to him. How on earth was she going to cope and not do something foolish like admit she still had feelings for him?

She needed that embarrassment like she needed the last twelve months.

“Excuse me,” he said suddenly, and he reached for his phone.

As he did, a thought suddenly wafted her way, then ballooned, and she pondered it.

Of course.

She breathed out a huge sigh of relief as it hit her.

Of course.

She straightened.

She was getting it all wrong. She was forgetting the critical fact here.

Alberto had shown no sign at all he was interested in her. Not a thing.

There had been nothing to indicate she was anything but a former university girlfriend he had called on for advice, one who was willing and able to help him out with the project because of her profession.

There was no way he was interested in her. And it was possible there was someone special in his life. He hadn’t mentioned anyone, but then, they weren’t here to talk about their personal lives
